Christian Boltanski's first solo exhibition in Tokyo is currently underway, with "ghosts" rumbling at the former residence of Prince Asaka

Sep 23, 2016

The exhibition "Christian Boltanski: Animitas—Rumbling Ghosts" is running through December 25th at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum in Shirokanedai, Tokyo. Christian Boltanski, a leading French contemporary artist, has used everyday materials such as photographs, vintage clothing, and biscuit tins to explore themes of life, death, and memory. His work invites viewers to contemplate the inner workings of the viewer while also stimulating the imagination with thoughts of what is already lost, what is no longer here, and what may have once been. This exhibition, Christian Boltanski's first solo exhibition in Tokyo and his first in a Japanese art museum in 26 years, features six installations, primarily works never before shown in Japan, including a new "Voice" piece, displayed in the main and annex buildings. The "Ghosts" unfold through a dialogue between the artworks and the unique space of the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, the former residence of Prince Asaka, which harbors layers of history and the memories of those who have passed through.

Also, the exhibition "Petals of Art Deco: The Interior Space of the Former Prince Asaka Residence" is currently being held, focusing on the museum's architecture itself, an Important Cultural Property, and showcasing the charm of this Art Deco mansion, which has been carefully preserved while continuing to be updated as an art museum. The venue will display original furnishings that have been restored and reproduced, as well as works and materials from the museum's collection by artists active during the Art Deco era, focusing on the interior space of the former Prince Asaka Residence and showcasing the charm of the building through details such as glass, tiles, stone, and ceramics. Photography is permitted inside the museum on weekdays.
