Photographer Sayo Nagase takes on the challenge of paper cutting. Photo exhibition "CUT-OUT" held

Sep 23, 2016

Photographer Sayo Nagase will be holding a solo exhibition, "CUT-OUT," at GALLERY 360° in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo, from September 23rd to October 8th, showcasing a new series of photographs using paper cutting techniques.

This time, Nagase is taking on the challenge of "CUT-OUT," cutting out geometric shapes from large pieces of paper and photographing women playing among the numerous cut-out pieces. This solo exhibition will allow viewers to enjoy Nagase's new worldview.

Regarding the exhibition, Nagase commented, "As children, before we are taught how to see the world, we are able to see the nakedness of people and things, and our curiosity allows us to freely create the future using our own unknown powers. I was inspired by a video I saw of Henri Matisse creating cut-outs in his studio. He gave up painting and, at the age of 78, discovered the new technique of cut-outs. I was astonished by how liberated his studio was, filled with so much freedom."

In addition, to coincide with the exhibition, a portfolio of 10 prints on aluminum plates and a photo book printed on silver paper will be published at the same time. Both are signed and limited edition with a number.
