Isetan Shinjuku will be holding an exhibition of works by Sylvain Le Guen, who was recognized as a French Living National Treasure (Maître d'Art) at the young age of 38, for two days on September 25th and 26th in the Kimono/Special Selection Kimono section on the 7th floor of the Main Building.
His works, inspired by Japanese origami, combine the gorgeousness and three-dimensionality of Western fans with the intricate functionality of Japanese folding fans, and have captivated many visitors. He is an artist who has garnered worldwide attention, having provided artwork for films such as "Marie Antoinette" and "Cinderella."
Currently residing in Kyoto, he actively incorporates Japanese kimono fabric and washi paper into his fan materials. This exhibition will showcase his elegant and gorgeous works, focusing on his new creations.

Traditional Japanese Techniques Captivating a Living National Treasure

When it came to materials for his fans, he focused on kimono and washi paper, crafted using traditional Japanese techniques. His collaboration with Kichiriya Jihee, a long-established Kyoto yuzen maker founded in 1555 and boasting 466 years of history, truly invigorated his artistic sensibilities. The roll of fabric is approximately 38 cm wide, and is richly decorated with traditional patterns. However, he realized that 38 cm was not enough to create a fan that would fully utilize the patterns. After much deliberation, he arrived at a novel idea: connecting two scenes. Moreover, by stitching plain organza between the layers, he succeeded in giving the fan a narrative feel.

He also traveled to Echizen, a major producer of washi paper, where he met Iwano Ichibei IX, a holder of Japan's Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure). After acquiring the washi paper Iwano had made, he began conceiving a design that would make the most of its characteristics. Facing the beautiful, light-transmitting washi paper, he imagined a scene from The Tale of Genji, Japan's most famous novel. He set out to portray a fantastical, misty, moonlit landscape on a fan. This marked the birth of a collaboration between two Living National Treasures from Japan and France.

This exhibition will focus on these distinctive works.
