Our Thursday series features must-read books from each branch of the art bookshop NADiff. This week's recommendation is Harada Osamu's "My Art Notes." NADiff modern, our Shibuya branch (Bunkamura, 2-24-1 Dogenzaka, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo), is introducing the book.
■ "My Art Notes" by Harada Osamu
This book is a collection of rich art essays that transcend genre boundaries with a light touch and a firm sense of the author's aesthetic, including Spanish tiles he encountered on the streets of Paris, a mystery novel with a cover design by Kitazono Katsue, a creepy-cute character he discovered in a comedy manga by Akatsuka Fujio, a wooden doll he bought as a souvenir from Shinshu, collages by his teacher Kawabata Minoru, and his beloved Komura Settei. This book is a collection of art essays written like daily memos by illustrator Osamu Harada, creator of "OSAMU GOODS," a brand that captivated junior and senior high school girls in the 1980s. It compiles essays originally published in magazines like "Relax" and "Geijutsu Shincho" in the early 21st century. The author, who breathes art like air, has chosen art at random, from around the world and throughout history, both famous and unknown, to not only pique your interest, but also gradually broaden your horizons and subtly teach you how to see and enjoy things. The simple and sophisticated book design is by Kazunari Hattori. At NADiff modern, we're currently running a corner in our store featuring related books highlighting the art featured in "My Art Notes."
