KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival 2016 kicked off on April 23rd. This year, the fourth annual event, is themed "Circle of Life," and features 14 exhibitions at 15 venues across Kyoto City, including the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art Annex, Ryosokuin (a subtemple of Kenninji Temple), and Mumyosha. Known for its unique venue-hopping, this year's festival also features gallery spaces such as Shoki-an, the former main residence of landscape gardener Mirei Shigemori, and the Nagae Family Residence, a Kyoto City designated tangible cultural property. At Shoki-an, Sarah Moon is exhibiting "Time Stand Still," her first attempt at platinum printing. In addition to her current exhibitions, Sarah Moon is also holding a new large-format print series, "Late Fall," at Gallery Sogata, and a solo exhibition at Kahitsukan in Gion. Additionally, the Nagae Family Residence will feature new works by Eriko Koga, winner of last year's KYOTOGRAPHIE satellite event KG+, while Arno Rafael Minkkinen will hold his first solo exhibition in Japan at Ryosokuin Temple. The exhibition features nature-themed works he has been capturing around the world for nearly 30 years, as well as works shot exclusively at Ryosokuin Temple in Kyoto. In terms of fashion, the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art's Annex, "Coming into Fashion - 100 Years of Fashion Photography from Condé Nast Presented by CHANEL NEXUS HALL," will feature archive works primarily from Vogue magazines spanning the 1920s to the present, including works by star photographers such as Edward Steichen, Irving Penn, Guy Bourdin, David Bailey, William Klein, and Helmut Newton. The museum also features an installation featuring Christian Sardet's work "PLANKTON: The Drifting Origin of Life," a microscopic photograph of plankton and other organisms, accompanied by the sound of Ryuichi Sakamoto and video by Shiro Takatani. Kondaya Genbei Kurogura, which always exhibits works with a strong message in a Kyoto-like space, is hosting an exhibition of works by Chris Jordan this time. Also on display is an assemblage of lamps made from trash washed up on the shores of Ishigaki Island, where the late designer Jurgen Lehl spent his final years. Last year, K-NARF collaborated with Pierre Hermé Paris to create art packaging, and their work has been featured at Colette in Paris. K-NARF, which presents a body of work called BLICOLAGE PHOTOGRAPHY, has relocated their current studio in Yoyogi, Tokyo, to the basement of the Murakami Jyu Building, where the exhibition is held. They will be staying at the venue and creating works from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM during the exhibition period, which runs until May 8th.
... Prints from Tsuzuki Kyoichi's "Kidaore Hojoki" are also on display, and Kyoto is packed with fashion-related art events during Golden Week.
