Levi's(R) x Naomi Osaka Launches Upcycled Denim Collection
Naomi Osaka is not only a four-time Grand Slam singles champion, but she is also a powerful young voice in the world of sports, inspiring millions with her authenticity and drive to stand up for important causes.
In a very short time, she has become not only an iconic athlete but also an ambassador for social change. She also has a passion for fashion design, making her a style icon in her own right. Levi's® is excited to partner with Naomi Osaka on the Levi's® x Naomi Osaka collection for Summer 2021. The Levi's® x Naomi Osaka collection will be available in Japan from August 24th at the Levi's® Harajuku Flagship Store, Levi's® Store Osaka, and the official Levi's® online store.
Throughout the collection, Naomi uses vintage and upcycled denim, perfectly capturing the silhouettes and design details with her unique mix of sporty and feminine styles. First up is the Denim Kimono, a sash paired with denim, paying homage to her Japanese heritage. "I loved wearing kimonos as a child, and I thought a denim kimono would be surprising and unexpected," says Naomi.
The collection also includes two denim shorts. On the sporty side is the Lace-Up Short, a clever interpretation of the classic Levi's® denim short, with raw hems above the knee and a lace-up back. It's made from upcycled men's Levi's® jeans. For a more feminine vibe, the Crystal Fringe Short is a pair of vintage Levi's® 501® shorts adorned with crystal fringe. These short, raw-heeled shorts feature elegant crystal fringe draping down the sides.
The collection is rounded off by the Trucker Jacket Bustier, a denim bustier with a lace-up back. This reimagining of the Levi's® Trucker Jacket features the classic lines, flap pockets, and shank buttons of the iconic Type III Trucker Jacket, creating a bustier cut in a traditional corset style with a lace-up back. "When I was sketching, I had the idea for a bustier and loved it. Now that it's actually made, I love it even more because it's so cute!" says Naomi.
The resulting collection perfectly blends sporty and feminine elements, paying homage to Naomi's rich heritage. And perhaps most importantly, the collection is constructed from vintage and upcycled denim, breathing new life into existing Levi's® pieces and reducing its environmental impact. "Committing to sustainability was very important to me, and I love that every piece in the collection is made from recycled or repurposed old clothing," says Naomi.
