Petit Robe Noir Yoshiyo Abe x Artist Aiko Tezuka "The Need for Fashion to Dress the Inside" [INTERVIEW] 2/2

Aug 23, 2015

■The Relationship Between Art and Fashion

From what the two of them have said, it is clear that there are many similarities between the two when it comes to creating fashion and art. However, it is probably not often that clothing and artworks are displayed side by side in the same space. So we asked them about their impressions of art from the perspective of fashion, and fashion from the perspective of art.

Tezuka's impression of fashion is that "it is a difficult world, with various constraints, such as it having to be wearable and the business developing over a six-month period. It is something that is used and worn out like clothing, not something to be protected in a frame. Within those constraints, you can express your message, incorporating questions about society and the history of fashion to date. But I think there is also fun in dealing with a world that is open to customers and buyers."

On the other hand, Abe said about art, "As was the case with Aiko's work, when you see a great piece of work, you feel something. Something that stays in your mind without words. I think it's an emotion that is born when something inside you connects with the work, and I think that this is truly important. There are emotions that you receive from objects. Whenever I have this experience through art, it always inspires me to create things that will enrich people's feelings when they own them."

Tezuka also said that he had recently felt the power of fashion. "I was so engrossed in my work that wearing accessories was like a different world to me. Then, Yoshiyo gave me some Petit accessories. When I put them on, I felt so good! It was like the world had changed. At that moment, I understood the importance of dressing up. Dressing up isn't just about making yourself look beautiful, it's also an act of looking at your inner self. People don't become beautiful primarily by wearing pretty clothes and accessories; it's the changes in themselves that make them appear more beautiful to others," she said with a laugh.

A pop-up store showcasing the works of these two artists will open on the third floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku on August 26th. The theme of the pop-up store is "dialogue," a dialogue between the two artists. During the exhibition, the works of the two artists will be displayed to convey the message of "dialogue." This is an opportunity to see a collaboration between fashion and art that is rarely seen together, even in museums.
