An exhibition commemorating the 60th anniversary of the death of painter Marie Laurencin will be held at the Eki Kyoto Museum of Art from October 28 to November 27. Marie Laurencin, a French female painter who lived through the turbulent times of the first half of the 20th century, constantly confronted herself and continued to explore new forms of artistic expression throughout those changing times. This exhibition will feature approximately 80 works, primarily oil paintings, from the Marie Laurencin Museum's collection, spanning her early to late years. The exhibition is divided into four sections: "Early Period 1904-1906," "Meeting with Apollinaire 1907-Early 1910," "Marriage to Baron von Wetschen Late 1910-1920," and "Mature to Late Years 1921-1956." The "Early Period 1904-1906" section will feature works from the period when she attended Fernand Humbert's art school and began her serious painting studies. "Meeting with Apollinaire 1907-First Half of 1910" displays works from the period when, after Laurencin left art school, she deepened her relationships with the painters who gathered at the "Laundry Boat" apartment complex, where Pablo Picasso and others lived, and through whom she met and fell in love with the poet Guillaume Apollinaire. "Marriage to Baron von Wetschen 1910-1920" displays works from the period when she separated from Apollinaire, married the German Baron Otto von Wetschen, and went into exile abroad. "Maturity to Final Years 1921-1956" displays works from the period when, against the backdrop of the Great Depression and World War II, she divorced Baron von Wetschen and devoted herself to painting in Paris. During this same period, the "Laurentiss Style" was born, based on soft, lovely pastel colors and expressed through outline-free shadows and shading.
During the exhibition, a gallery lecture will be held on October 28th, featuring a guest speaker from the Marie Laurencin Museum, and gallery talks will be held on November 7th and 21st.
