IKEA Japan, the Japanese subsidiary of IKEA, a Swedish home furnishing company with a vision of "creating a better everyday life for the many people," will launch the limited-edition "IKEA Art Event 2021" collection in collaboration with five cutting-edge contemporary artists from around the world at IKEA Harajuku and IKEA Shibuya from April 28, 2021. It will also be available at IKEA Shinjuku from the opening day.

Since 2015, IKEA has been presenting the Art Event collection in collaboration with artists from around the world. The goal is to make art accessible to everyone by making it a part of everyday life. This year's sixth collection features 10 items that challenge our perspective on everyday objects while respecting everyday creativity. Five artists from different backgrounds and bases have taken their curiosity and added their unique artistic flair to everyday objects such as clocks, lamps, flashlights, vases, throws and wall decorations. GELCHOP, a 3D printing group based in Japan, has put their own unique twist on IKEA's most iconic item, the hex wrench, creating a table lamp and a flashlight in two colors. "Every item in this collection is functional and at the same time a work of art," says Henrik Most, IKEA's creative lead for the IKEA Art Event 2021. "The traditional idea that art is luxury and design belongs to popular culture is no longer appropriate. The perfect harmony between the two – that's where the magic happens."

Participating Artists
GELCHOP
The Japanese sculpting group GELCHOP deconstructs everyday objects and combines them with other elements to transform them into fun, engaging, and functional pieces. GELCHOP's artworks and products encourage us to see things differently and reconsider the "true" purpose of objects.

Daniel Arsham
Daniel Arsham is an American multidisciplinary artist whose work combines art, architecture, and performance. He has collaborated extensively with other creative leaders in a wide range of fields, including theater, fashion, interior design, and architecture. In his latest work, he explores ideas related to futuristic civilizations and archaeological collapse. Arsham is also the co-founder of the New York-based design studio Snarkitecture.

Sabine Marcelis
Born in New Zealand and based in the Netherlands, Sabine Marcelis is fascinated by the inherent properties of materials and their effects, such as the reflective qualities of resin and glass. Her work is process-driven, as her designs take shape in her studio, experimenting with a wide range of ideas and materials. Her work strives to create magical experiences through captivating designs, whether they be products, installations, or spatial design.

Stefan Marx
Stefan Marx is a German artist and illustrator. He uses his unique style to capture and depict the everyday. He draws inspiration from various subcultures, including graffiti and techno, to create his artwork. His mediums range from skateboard designs to large-scale oil paintings to porcelain vases.
