About Takashi Murakami
Takashi Murakami was born in Tokyo in 1962. A member of the MoMA collection, he is known for blurring the lines between fine art and pop culture. His work is heavily influenced by manga, a style of Japanese comic books and animation. In 1994, Murakami received a fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council and participated in MoMA PS1's International Studio Program. Murakami's work has been featured in several MoMA exhibitions, including "Comic Abstraction: Image-Breaking, Image-Making," which began in 2007.

Why We Chose This
MoMA has long considered masks from a design perspective. The 1962 exhibition "Design for Sport," held in MoMA's Sculpture Garden, featured a number of masks designed for sports. MoMA's 1991 exhibition, "Modern Masks and Helmets," documented 20th-century designs designed to keep us safe in a variety of settings, from everyday activities and sports to life-threatening situations. The 2005 exhibition, "SAFE: Design Takes On Risk," showcased numerous mask designs, along with others designed to protect us from dangerous and stressful situations, respond to emergencies, and provide comfort and safety. The MoMA Design Store continues this tradition, offering mask designs for protection, peace of mind, and even enjoyment.
