■ "The Water Woman" by Toshiyuki Takamiya

In the mid-19th century, in Victorian England, where freedom of expression was restricted, three painters—Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, and William Holman Hunt—formed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in opposition to the repressive academicism of the time. They idealized the straightforward and honest Early Renaissance painting of pre-Raphaelite artists with bright colors and precise depictions. Their beautiful and seductive female figures are surprisingly delicate and possess a powerful allure that instantly captivates the viewer. This book features over 100 works by Pre-Raphaelite and fin de siècle artists, featuring sirens, mermaids, pagan Venus figures, and other "water women." While themes are similar, the artist's portrayal of women varies. This unique book offers a deeper insight into the distinctive character of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, highlighting its essential role in myth and poetry. From December 22 to March 6, 2016, Bunkamura The Museum in Shibuya, Tokyo, will host the "English Dream: Pre-Raphaelites" exhibition. This exhibition, featuring over 60 oil and watercolor paintings by the Pre-Raphaelites and their followers from the collection of the National Museums of Liverpool, highlights the "Englishness" of modern British art through the keyword "English Dream." This book is a must-read for anyone interested in this exhibition.
