Chaos*Louise holds the "Character Crush!" exhibition, with participation from Saeborg, Kazuki Umezawa, and others.

Oct 9, 2014

The contemporary artist collective Chaos*Lodge, celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, will be holding the "Character Crush!" exhibition at its Tokyo studio from October 11th through November 2nd.
The exhibition's theme, "Character Crush," is a portmanteau of "character" and "crush." The term is a nod to "iconoclasm," inspired by the 2002 "Iconoclast" exhibition held in Germany. Rather than focusing on what the characters themselves represent, the exhibition focuses on the manipulation and alteration of characters, as well as the process by which transformed characters are distributed and consumed. The exhibition focuses on works by artists who manipulate characters to redefine the relationship between fiction and reality, artificially intervening in the realms of "public" and "private."
The venue, designed and curated by Yohei Kurose, will feature new works by 15 artists, utilizing the entire building, as well as an installation reconstructing Chaos*Lodge's stock from the past five years. The venue will be their studio in Tokyo, where they have been based. The building, a prewar wooden structure over 80 years old, is scheduled for demolition after the exhibition ends. The venue address will be announced on the Chaos*Lounge official website soon.

Chaos*Lounge is a contemporary artist collective active primarily online, founded in 2008 by artist Uso Fujishiro as an exhibition and live painting project. Since Yohei Kurose joined as curator in 2010, the group has developed a variety of projects, sparking controversy with its critical approach to the history and context of Japanese contemporary art.

Participating artists include Momoka Aiso, Iwao Arakawa, Ichirinsha, Kazuki Umezawa, Yutaka Umeda, Kuuugun, Otoutaro, Saeborg, Narco, Haiyuni, Uso Fujishiro, Anri Mikoma, Yuka Yanagimoto, Suguru Yamamoto, and Kazuki Takakura.
