JULIEN DAVID held a show for its 2016-17 Autumn/Winter collection at the Palais de Tokyo. The show kicked off with lines from a Japanese manga. The first look featured a model wearing a white shirt and shorts, wearing a mask from Go Nagai's UFO Robot Grendizer, turned backwards. Julian David grew up watching Grendizer as a child. Many pieces, including a 3D bonded denim skirt and a drop-shoulder bonded denim jacket, featured taut materials, evoking a somewhat robotic stiffness. Variations of the 3D skirt and denim jacket were also featured, featuring black and silver metallic vinyl bonded materials, as well as burgundy denim bonded materials. The basic shapes were accented with gathers and ruffles. The Grendizer-printed frock coats and blousons were all oversized with drop shoulders. There were also drop shoulder sweatshirts and intarsia knit pullovers with Grendizer prints, demonstrating Julian David's strong attachment to Grendizer.
