Hey and Ho, a Hasami ware shop overlooking the sea [Fukuoka Travel]

Mar 28, 2017
Hasami ware is a type of porcelain produced near Hasami Town in central Nagasaki Prefecture. Beginning in the Edo period as miscellaneous utensils for the common people, Hasami ware has become known as everyday pottery thanks to its ability to be mass-produced. It's so familiar that even those who don't know it have probably picked it up at least once.

Among the many potteries, the most prominent ceramic brands are "HASAMI," "Baba Shoten," "Monohara," and "the place." Maruhiro, which has its office and retail store in Arita Town, Saga Prefecture, operates these brands. In 2015, to bring Hasami ware closer to people, the company opened a sister store, HEY&Ho., on the Itoshima Peninsula in Fukuoka Prefecture.

Leaving the bagel shop Spoonful the Bagel mentioned earlier, we drive for just under 10 minutes along the coast of Nishiura, jutting out into the Genkai Sea, and encounter a resort-like landscape surrounded by palm trees. We arrive at Palm Beach Gardens, a complex of shops. This is where you'll find Hey and Ho, a shop that sells Hasami ware. Look for the bulldog illustration and a giant Hasami ware mug that's 100 times the size of the original, placed right in the center of the store!

The illustration of the mascot dog for a Hakata ramen shop was created by Noncherry, who is also based in Fukuoka. Inspired by a five-story dance floor, five soba choko cups depict different situations on each floor.

On a clear day, you can see yachts and surfers floating on the beautiful ocean and the setting sun from the shop windows. "Fukuoka's Little LA," you can feel like you're on the American West Coast while in Japan.
