Mitsubishi Rayon develops new material to suppress smells from damp laundry

Nov 12, 2013
Mitsubishi Rayon has developed "VONNEL Ag," a fabric suitable for indoor drying. By incorporating silver (Ag) into the fibers, the material combines high antibacterial properties with durability against washing. The silver-based antibacterial agent used is highly safe and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It inhibits the growth of Moraxella bacteria, the cause of odors from indoor drying, and prevents the development of damp or residual odors. Among metals, silver has particularly strong oxidizing power, altering and destroying proteins, inhibiting their activation and proliferation. According to data from a Mitsubishi Rayon affiliate, the bactericidal activity against Moraxella bacteria is 2.2 after 10 washes and over 3.1 after 100 washes. It is said to effectively reduce the number of bacteria over time. Looking at the example of detergents, it's clear that there is a great need for solutions to combat odors from indoor drying. Going forward, the company plans to expand into a variety of applications, including clothing applications such as innerwear, outerwear, sweaters, textiles, and padding, construction and bedding applications such as sheets, and even nursing care applications.
