Contemporary art meets cultural assets. "TAGBOAT x 100-Step Staircase" exhibition, jointly organized by Tugboat and Hotel Gajoen Tokyo

Event Date:2020.09.11-10.11
Sep 16, 2020
Hotel Gajoen Tokyo, a museum hotel of Japanese beauty, and TAGBOAT Co., Ltd., operator of Asia's largest online gallery, are hosting the "TAGBOAT x 100-Step Staircase" exhibition from September 11 to October 11, 2020, at the "100-Step Staircase," a tangible cultural property designated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government within Hotel Gajoen Tokyo. Original artworks by 30 emerging artists selected by TAGBOAT create a new worldview within the cultural property. As part of its efforts to encourage students to live in the future and experience culture, the exhibition also offers a special discount of 500 yen for students. This special exhibition not only offers an opportunity to experience the fusion of contemporary art and the world of beauty created by leading painters and carpenters of the early Showa period, but also supports the generation that has been unable to make memories since spring due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Highlight 1. "A Collaboration that Transcends the Ages"
The former Meguro Gajoen Building No. 3, built in 1935, commonly known as the "Hundred Steps Staircase," is the only surviving wooden structure within the building. Connected by a 99-step staircase corridor, each room is designed differently, and the ceilings and transoms of each room are filled with a world of beauty created by the leading painters and carpenters of the time. After being registered as a national tangible cultural property, it was designated a Tokyo Metropolitan Tangible Cultural Property in 2009, and remains a symbolic location of Hotel Gajoen Tokyo, retaining its original appearance to this day. This unique space has been used as the stage for a special project in which 30 emerging artists selected by TAGBOAT, operator of Asia's largest online gallery, have created a new world view with their unique artworks. Experience a collaboration that transcends the eras of Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa.

Highlight 2. "A life with art, including the works of future masters"
TAGBOAT's corporate philosophy of "increasing the number of artists who can make a living from art" and "communicating artists' worldviews in an easy-to-understand manner" was also practiced by the founder of the former Meguro Gajoen. Not only can you view the exhibition, but you can also purchase items (with some exceptions). The exhibition is structured to enable creators and visitors to encounter each other through the works, and to support a life with art and its future.

Highlight 3. "Joint Exhibition Using a Variety of Techniques"
The artists participating in this exhibition are up-and-coming artists with a wide range of expressive abilities, and they not only create paintings using a variety of techniques, but also installations using Japanese paper, photography, digital works, and three-dimensional works. Multiple artists will be exhibiting together in rooms with different designs within the One Hundred Steps Staircase, in an attempt to maximize the appeal of each artist through the synergistic effect between the artists and the space.

Special project: "Students can enter for a flat rate of 500 yen"
We hope that this will be an opportunity for students, who will live in the future, to come into contact with culture, so during the exhibition period we will be running a special project where the admission fee, which is usually 1,000 yen, will be reduced to a special price of 500 yen. In addition to providing an opportunity to experience contemporary art, the event will also serve as a way to support the generation who were unable to make memories this spring due to the spread of COVID-19.
