Chilean architect Smiljan Radic's solo exhibition at TOTO Gallery MA features a collection of contemporary fables expressed through the sources of thought and models

Jul 7, 2016

Architect Smiljan Radić's solo exhibition "Smiljan Radić Exhibition: BESTIARY: Fables" will be held at TOTO Gallery MA in Nogizaka, Tokyo from July 8th to September 10th. Radić, who continues to work creatively from his base in Santiago, the capital of Chile, has been attracting attention for his unique worldview in the world of contemporary South American architecture, which has seen growing interest in recent years. His major works include the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2014 in London, England; House to the Poetry of the Right Angle in Vilches, Chile; and NAVE - Performing Arts Hall in Santiago. In 2010, he exhibited the installation "Boy Hiding in a Fish" at the Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition, and as one of seven architects featured in the exhibition "GLOBAL ENDS - Towards the Beginning," held to commemorate the 25th anniversary of TOTO Gallery Ma, he presented a work titled "Hideout" on an 1,800mm square display stand. In 2013, he held the exhibition "Closet and Mattress" at Ginza Maison Hermès with sculptor Marcela Correa, who, like Radić, is based in Santiago. Radić draws inspiration from his own inner Chilean landscapes, artworks, and favorite fairy tales, creating highly poetic works that boldly and skillfully use amorphous materials such as boulders and resin membranes to create works that respond to the shape of the site and its environment. For example, one of his representative works, the "Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2014," was developed from a prototype model he created in 2010, "The Selfish Giant's House," inspired by Oscar Wilde's short story "The Selfish Giant." This exhibition, titled "BESTIARY: Fables," presents Radić's collection of modern fables, centered around over 20 models of fantastical creatures. Also on display are some 70 sketchbooks Radić has used to draw and record his projects, as well as a fictional "Guide to Contemporary Chilean Architecture," inspired by the book "The Invention of Chile."
