Aug 28, 2020

IKEA Japan, the Japanese subsidiary of IKEA, a Swedish home furnishing company with a vision of "creating a better everyday life for the many people," announces that it will release the "BYGGLEK" collection, a playful storage solution born from a collaboration between IKEA and the LEGO Group, in IKEA stores nationwide and the IKEA online store. Sales in Japan are scheduled to begin in spring 2021.

On August 27, 2020, IKEA and the LEGO Group will announce "BYGGLEK," a playful storage solution born from a collaboration between the two brands. The new BYGGLEK collection features a LEGO brick-inspired design and includes several storage boxes with LEGO brick studs, as well as original BYGGLEK brick sets. The goal is not only to inspire playfulness but also to make organizing your home more fun.

Driven by the strong belief that "play makes not only the home but the world a better place," IKEA and the LEGO Group decided to remove obstacles to play in everyday life and create practical, exciting experiences that children and adults can enjoy together.

■ Create an exciting new experience for children's creative play environments
Play is the most intuitive and efficient way for children to learn and grow. But when it comes to indoor play and creativity, children and adults sometimes have different ideas about how to play and create. While adults often feel the need to create rules and be organized, children crave a stimulating, creative environment where they can play, stop and continue playing as they please*.

Tidying up and organizing a child's creative space while they're playing can hinder not only their play but also their opportunities for creative expression and development. That's why we developed a storage solution that makes tidying up an exciting and fun experience in itself. BYGGLEK boxes have protrusions on the top and front that allow you to build with LEGO bricks, turning the storage box into an extension of your creations. You can store LEGO bricks inside the box and proudly display your creations on top.

Quote from Andreas Fredriksson, Designer, IKEA of Sweden
At IKEA, we believe in the power of play. Play provides opportunities for exploration, experimentation, imagination and discovery. What adults might see as messy is an inspiring and creative environment for children. BYGGLEK bridges this gap in perception and encourages more creative play in homes around the world. BYGGLEK also complements other IKEA products and blends seamlessly with your home's interior, allowing you to beautifully display your prized creations.

BYGGLEK is more than just a box. It combines storage and play. BYGGLEK includes products that help families create more space for play in their daily lives, stimulating creativity and allowing them to have more fun together. Play, display your cool creations, then continue playing, remodeling, or rebuilding from scratch. The appeal of BYGGLEK lies in the endless possibilities, just like the LEGO System in Play.

■A creative storage solution that combines fun and functionality
BYGGLEK boxes have protrusions on the top and front, allowing children to build with LEGO bricks and use the storage box as part of their creations. The protrusions are part of the LEGO System in Play, meaning they can be used with other LEGO brick products. You can also store LEGO bricks inside the box and leave your masterpiece on top until the next time you play.

Children will use the LEGO System in Play to repeatedly build their own unique stories, and in the process, they will learn skills they will need in the future. BYGGLEK, a creative storage solution that combines fun and functionality, is expected to further expand children's play experiences with LEGO bricks.

BYGGLEK will be available in Japan from spring 2021 at IKEA stores nationwide and on the IKEA online store. Detailed product information, such as price, will be announced at the time of release. *In the IKEA Play Report, when IKEA asked children what they wanted, 47% answered "I want to play more with my parents." At the same time, 90% of parents questioned believe that play is important and consider it essential for health and happiness. The LEGO Play Well Study 2020 also found that parents recognized the importance of letting their children play freely. Eight in ten parents (85%) acknowledge that messy play makes children feel free and encourages creativity. However, one in two parents (51%) worry about their children making a mess while they play, and feel the urge to tidy up before they're finished. This is further reinforced by nine in ten children (90%) who say their parents often tell them to tidy up while they're still playing.
