Following Tokyo and Kanagawa, the "Joao Pedro Rodrigues Retrospective," a special screening of the works of Portuguese rising star director Joao Pedro Rodrigues, will be held in the Kansai region.
Rodrigues is said to be a descendant of Jean Genet and Rainer Werner Fassbinder and is highly regarded in Europe. While his films often explore themes of homosexuality, his dynamic, pop-infused depictions with a classical atmosphere share a similarity with cutting-edge European art.
His debut feature film, "Fantasma," shot in 2000, premiered in the competition section of the Venice International Film Festival and caused a great stir. In 2009, his film "Die as a Man," which depicts the interactions between Tonya, a middle-aged drag queen living in Lisbon, and the people around her, was selected as one of the top ten films of the year by the French magazine Cahiers du Cinema. His latest film, "Macau: A Journey Through Time," won the Grand Prix in the documentary category at the Turin Film Festival.
Special screenings will be held at Nakanoshima Museum de sign de from April 9th, at Doshisha University Kanbaikan Hardy Hall from April 18th, and at Cine Nouveau from April 19th.
Related events include a "Drag Queen Makeup Class" where participants can try makeup with Simone Miyuki, one of Japan's leading drag queens, as instructor, and a talk event with film critic Otera Shinsuke.
