[13-14 AW Exhibition] "MUVEIL" is a Wizard of Oz themed retro fantasy

Apr 4, 2013

Michiko Nakayama's MUVEIL Fall/Winter 2013 collection was inspired by the 1939 American film "The Wizard of Oz." Inspired by the protagonist Dorothy's house, the collection features patterned fabrics like wallpaper and sofas, cross-stitch embroidery featuring flowers and foxes, and the trimmings on curtains and cushions have been transformed into accessories. To recreate the film's color palette, which had just switched from sepia to color, the collection expresses the film's world in various ways, such as layering vinyl over turquoise and pink lace. The collection includes two series: the black of the Wicked Witch of the East and the white of the Good Witch of the West, as well as rich pieces made with fur and leather, house-shaped felt bags, and a basket bag matching Dorothy's, which Nakayama said she "wanted to propose for fall/winter." The collection was presented at an exhibition during Paris Fashion Week. The brand has approximately 20 clients overseas, including Italy and Moscow, and saw particularly strong new sales this season. "The stock that arrived at Colette (a select shop) in Paris sold out immediately. It's a bit disappointing that they didn't have any left in stores until Fashion Week (when many people in the fashion industry from overseas visit)," says Nakayama.
