Moriwaki's Inro iPhone cover is made from machined aluminum. Event held at Daikanyama TSUTAYA

Apr 24, 2013

Maruwakaya, a company that produces Japanese "monozukuri" (craftsmanship) from traditional crafts to cutting-edge manufacturing, and Moriwaki Engineering, known for its elite group of racing motorcycle engineers, have teamed up to create the "Collect of Japan" iPhone 5 cover, which will be released at the end of May.

Moriwaki Engineering developed an original frame made entirely from machined aluminum. This frame literally serves as a "frame" into which a removable back plate fits. The back plate features Maekawa Inden, a renowned master of the traditional "Inden" technique. The cover is black and comes in four patterns: Saayagata (Saaya pattern), Asanoha (Hemp Leaf pattern), Seigaiha (Blue Wave pattern), and Takarazukushi (Treasure Allure). It will be priced at ¥16,800.

To commemorate the release of this iPhone 5 cover, an event will be held at Daikanyama T-Site Books from April 24th. The exhibition will showcase a glimpse into Moriwaki's craftsmanship, including a number of valuable items that evoke the history of Moriwaki Engineering and archives of the process leading up to the creation of the new iPhone 5 cover. Additionally, a talk show titled "Maruwakaya's Creations" will be held, featuring four guests: Maruwakaya CEO Hirotoshi Maruwaka, HUGE magazine editor Takuto Kawashima, and ELLE DECOR editor-in-chief Takako Kida. Leading up to the release of the "Collect of Japan" iPhone 5 cover, Daikanyama T-Site will also be selling a limited edition set of 100 iPhone covers, each featuring a Moriwaki frame and two high-quality leather back plates engraved with the Moriwaki logo. Available in four colors: white and brown, blue and white, red and blue, and brown and red, each set will cost ¥18,900.
