Space and visual design by Daido Moriyama and YOSHIROTTEN. "SHINJUKU_RESOLUTION" captures Shinjuku in a new resolution at Isetan The Space

Event Date:2020.08.21-09.23
Aug 14, 2020
The store will feature spatial and visual designs by Daido Moriyama x YOSHIROTTEN, as well as collaborative items between Shinjuku's renowned shops and creators.

Shinjuku, our city, has many faces and a motley atmosphere.

Due to its strong foundations, it remained largely unaffected during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, allowing traffic to concentrate around the station and develop. The postwar black market gave way to a shopping district, and the rapid commercial growth of the 1960s established the foundation for modern-day Shinjuku. During the period of rapid economic growth, the Nishi-Shinjuku side underwent a redevelopment boom, and the area has continued to evolve even since the relocation of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in 1991. The complex, patchwork character of the city, along with this history, continues to exude its timeless charm.

RESOLUTION - Resolution

Things appear before our eyes only by increasing the resolution
Things emerge by decreasing the resolution and increasing abstraction
We are able to read and feel expressions that go beyond the senses we can obtain by simply enlarging or reducing an image.

Resolution precision exists in many multi-layered perspectives.
Those who conduct business, those who live their lives, and those who come with goals and feelings
The people who visit here are themselves part of the city's landscape, a complex array of human activities
The state of Shinjuku and the gaze directed towards it inspire artists, and inspire culture.

This time, we have planned an experiment that combines the historic shops and areas surrounding Isetan with artists with ties to them, to bring out the charms not found in this homogenized city.

The main visual and spatial design for this event were created by YAR, led by renowned Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama and art director YOSHIROTTEN. The visuals feature YOSHIROTTEN discovering new images by moving back and forth between different resolutions of fragments of Shinjuku that were cut out and digitized by Moriyama.
