Kanazawa Castle at night becomes an art space of light. TeamLab holds "Kanazawa Castle Light Festival"

Oct 10, 2023
The art collective teamLab will be holding a night-time light art exhibition, "teamLab Kanazawa Castle: Festival of Digitized Light," at Kanazawa Castle Park in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, from September 30 to November 26, 2023.

Kanazawa Castle itself will be transformed into an art space, showcasing several works, including "Animals Living with Flowers on the Stone Walls of Kanazawa Castle," in which animals made from the stone walls and flowers of Kanazawa Castle's symbolic "Gojukken Nagaya" walk around; and "Trees Resonating with Autonomous yet Resonating Life," a space of light that changes forever with wind, rain, and people's behavior. This exhibition will be held as part of the 38th National Cultural Festival and the 23rd National Arts and Culture Festival for Persons with Disabilities, "Ishikawa Hyakumangoku Cultural Festival 2023."

teamLab is currently working on an art project called "Digitized City." This project uses immaterial digital technology to transform buildings and locations into art spaces without physically altering them. Kanazawa Castle, which has existed for a long time, becomes the artwork space. The space transforms interactively in response to the wind, rain, and the behavior of people in the area, making people part of the artwork and nature, and part of a longer period of time. This creates a seamless continuity between the artwork, people, and nature, between oneself and others, and between the present and the past.

《Enso on an ancient stone wall》

We continue to draw "enso" on the stone wall on the north side of Higashinomaru, which was built in the 1590s. The black of the light-painted calligraphy signifies the absence of light, making it indistinguishable from the shadows cast by the stone walls, created by weathering over hundreds of years.

《The Giant Spark Within Us》

A sphere formed by the collection of countless beams of light. Countless thin lines of light radiate from the center, forming the sphere. The light source is stationary, but the countless lines continue to move, giving the impression of sparks flying.

《Walk, Walk, Walk - Kanazawa Castle》

A diverse, anonymous group of portraits continues to walk along the stone walls of Kanazawa Castle. The characters in the work continue their endless walk, confronting various events. The viewer, too, is confronted by the characters in the work who walk across the world one after another. The work is not a pre-recorded video, but is rendered in real time by a computer program, and is never replicated, ever changing. You will never see this moment again.

When the egg-shaped object of light is pushed by a person or blown by the wind and falls over, it changes color of its light as it stands up, and emits a tone specific to that color.

Animals living among the flowers on the stone walls of Kanazawa Castle

The animals are formed by the stone walls of Gojikken Nagaya and the flowers that are constantly being born and dying. The flowers bloom in succession with each season, and when the flowers have fallen, the animals die and disappear.

Drawing Warriors

Drawing Warriors will also be on display, featuring historical warriors with ties to Kanazawa, such as Maeda Toshiie. When visitors draw a picture of a warrior on paper, it will come to life in a huge grassland in front of them, and when they touch the warrior, a famous quote from that character will appear in a speech bubble. At the Drawing Factory, visitors can also have their drawing made into a tin badge to take home.
