1. Drama "Crash Landing on You"
(2019/South Korea)
  (2019/South Korea)
Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin), the daughter of a South Korean conglomerate, is engulfed in a tornado while paragliding and crash-lands in North Korea. There, she meets Ri Jeong-hyuk (Hyun Bin), a strict officer, and begins living in hiding. While trying to return Seri to South Korea, Jeong-hyuk protects her with all his might. The two gradually grow closer... The drama faithfully recreates North Korea's streetscapes, lifestyle, style, and even accent. The South Korean actors also deliver such convincing performances that you could mistake them for North Koreans. In the middle of the drama, there's a scene where Jeong-hyeok and his five subordinates, always entertaining with their cute personalities, defect to Seoul. It's adorable to see them, usually dressed in military uniforms, embracing fashion by imitating others in order to become Seoul men. Jeong-hyeok continues to protect Seri's happiness, even at the risk of his own life. What will become of this love between these two, who cross the border that should never have come together? Each episode is a 90-minute affair, and with plenty of content, it's a drama that will have you laughing and crying in the blink of an eye, and you can't help but want to know what happens next.
2. "A Brighter Summer Day" (1991/Taiwan)
Following "Taipei Story" and "The Terrorists," director Edward Yang released "A Brighter Summer Day" in 1991. While hailed as a masterpiece that will go down in cinematic history, it has remained hidden for a long time, never released on DVD, since its 1992 premiere and subsequent VHS release. In 2017, a digitally remastered version was released in Japan for the first time in nearly 25 years, and it also began streaming on Netflix in August 2019. Now you can finally watch it on your smartphone. Set in Taipei in the 1960s, this turbulent and breathtakingly intense story of youth is depicted. This 3-hour, 56-minute epic, composed of light and shadow, remains fresh and vivid, far from fading.
3. "Mother" (2009/South Korea)
The Korean film "Parasite" achieved a historic feat at the 92nd Academy Awards. Bong Joon-ho, the world's most acclaimed director and co-writer, directed and co-wrote the film Mother, his fourth feature film, released in 2009. It's a social suspense drama about the bond between mother and son. Do-joon (Won Bin), an innocent young man, becomes a suspect in a brutal murder case that takes place in a rural Korean town, while his mother (Kim Hye-ja) works hard to clear her son's name. Kim Hye-ja is a renowned actress who has played so many maternal roles that she is known in Korea as the "mother of Korea." The opening dance scene will remain etched in the memory of viewers forever.
4. "TOKYO!" (2008 / France, Japan, South Korea, and Germany co-production)
This anthology film features three talented directors: Bong Joon-ho, who was introduced in the previous film, as well as Michel Gondry of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" from France and Leos Carax of "Les Amis de Bon Neuf." The film is made up of three short stories, all set in Tokyo: "Interior Design" (directed by Michel Gondry, starring Fujitani Fumiko and Kase Ryo), "Meld" (directed by Leos Carax, starring Denis Laban), and "Shaking Tokyo" (directed by Bong Joon-ho, starring Kagawa Teruyuki and Aoi Yu). Director Bong Joon-ho's film is a fantastical love story depicting the strange emotional exchange between the reclusive protagonist played by Kagawa Teruyuki and a pizza delivery girl played by Aoi Yu. The delicate tension that constantly flows through each scene will hold your breath, make your heart flutter, and may even make you feel like you're in love. Don't miss the unique cast, including Takenaka Naoto, Arakawa Ryo Ryo, Matsushige Yutaka, and Yamamoto Koji.
