Miyashita Park in Shibuya becomes "MIYASHITA PARK," a low-rise complex combining shopping and a hotel

Jan 22, 2020
Shibuya Ward's Miyashita Park will be redeveloped as "MIYASHITA PARK," a park, shopping mall, and hotel complex, and will have its grand opening in June. It will be reborn as a multi-level urban park, a low-rise, multi-purpose complex stretching approximately 330 meters, connecting the surrounding areas of Shibuya.

"MIYASHITA PARK" North and South Blocks

Shibuya Ward's Miyashita Park opened in 1953. Subsequent developments, such as the construction of a rooftop park to accommodate parking lots and the addition of sports facilities like a skating rink, have made it a popular spot for both Shibuya residents and visitors alike.

The newly announced "MIYASHITA PARK" is a new "low-rise complex" that combines a park, parking lot, commercial facilities, and hotel, with a site area of approximately 10,740 m2, total floor space of approximately 46,000 m2, and a total length of approximately 330 m. Shibuya Ward's Miyashita Park, which was previously divided into two blocks, north and south, will be unified as a park, including the airspace above the road, and redeveloped into a fully flat, barrier-free, multi-functional space of approximately one hectare.

In addition to a skate rink and bouldering wall, a new multi-purpose sports facility with a sand court will be built in the park's south block. The north block will have a lawn area of approximately 1,000 m2 that can be used to host a variety of events.

MIYASHITA PARK combines a park, parking lot, retail facilities, and a hotel.
MIYASHITA PARK is located at the junction of Shibuya Station, Harajuku, Aoyama, Omotesando, and even the National Yoyogi Stadium (Yoyogi Park). Taking advantage of this location, MIYASHITA PARK aims to create a cultural hub that promotes interaction among a diverse range of people through new pedestrian networks and a variety of events. This will not only simplify access from Shibuya Station, but also improve the scenery by renovating the current Shibuya River promenade and constructing a new crosswalk at Jingumae 6-chome intersection.

Overall View of "MIYASHITA PARK"
This project marks the first time that Shibuya Ward has utilized the "Multi-Level Urban Park System," which was established based on the 2004 amendment to the Urban Parks Act. Miyashita Park, a Shibuya Ward park, was established in 1966 as Tokyo's first rooftop park. In addition to ensuring barrier-free access and addressing seismic resistance issues due to aging, the park is also required to respond to societal changes such as heightened disaster prevention awareness and increased visitor numbers. The park will be redeveloped to become an even more attractive "wide-area park" utilizing private-sector expertise. Its earthquake resistance will also be improved, allowing it to function as a temporary evacuation site for residents of surrounding areas who are unable to return home in the event of a disaster.
