Masamichi Katayama, founder and president of Wonderwall and professor of Scenography, Display and Fashion Design at Musashino Art University, released a message book for everyone, from students to working professionals, entitled "Professor Masamichi Katayama's Way of Creating Rules for Work," on September 12th. When Masamichi Katayama first took up his post as a professor at Musashino Art University, he asked himself, "If I were a university student now, what kind of talk would make my life more meaningful?" This prompted him to start planning and hosting the special lecture series "Instigator." Since its launch in 2011, the series has welcomed 23 guest speakers. The word "instigator" means someone who instigates. The newly released book, "Professor Masamichi Katayama's How to Create Rules for Work," features intensive lectures by instigators, including editor Kyoichi Tsuzuki, musician and artist Tortoise Matsumoto, teamLab founder Toshiyuki Inoko, film director Hirokazu Koreeda, and photographer Takashi Homma. The lectures explore how instigators spent their childhoods and student years, the turning points they faced, how they overcame hardships, and why they continue to produce highly original works. The content evokes the passion of the approximately 500 students gathered in the venue. Students are surely not the only ones who will learn something, discover their passion, and be inspired to put it into practice after hearing the candid truths shared by instigators from different fields. Even those already working in the workforce who believe these stories are about successful people different from themselves are mistaken. This book, which conveys the "now" that only comes from struggling through a series of failures and hardships, may be more powerful than any self-help book. Katayama also touches on how he overcame the difficult times he faced when he was starting his career, including the rules he imposed on himself at the time.
