Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Saturday, we will introduce books selected by Shelf (3-7-4 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo), a bookstore in Harajuku's Gaienmae area that specializes in foreign books.

This week, we will be featuring two collections of works by American professional skateboarder, artist, and photographer Ed Templeton, and his wife, American photographer Deanna Templeton.



■ "Yesterday" by Deanna Templeton

"Yesterday" is a photography project that Deanna Templeton undertook specially for SuperLab.

Deanna chronicles an ordinary day from morning to night using Polaroid photographs. The camera captures the floating moments that come and go throughout her day, from intimate scenes of herself busying herself with household chores in her home and garden to the architecture, flora, fauna, and people of Huntington Beach (friends, family, and strangers alike). "Yesterday" is Deanna Templeton's intimate documentary, offering a glimpse into her daily life in Southern California, where she finds beauty and inspiration. (-Ed Templeton)









■ "City Confessions #1 TOKYO" Ed Templeton

The photographs in this book were taken during seven visits to Tokyo between 1998 and 2018. Many of the photographs were taken between 2016 and 2018. I first came to Tokyo in 1998 to take part in a skateboarding tour. I then visited twice in 2001, once for "Untitled 2001," a large-scale exhibition spanning the entire 23 wards, and again for a skateboarding tour. On these first three occasions, when I wasn't skateboarding, I spent a lot of time walking, wandering, and photographing the streets.

Then, in 2016, I returned to Tokyo for the first time in a long while as a tourist. On these recent trips, I have focused more than ever on observing and photographing the lives and rhythms of Tokyo's people. I love finding moments in Tokyo that reveal the very essence of human existence, its customs and manners.

City Confessions #1 Tokyo is the first photobook in the "City Confessions" series. The series is ongoing and will eventually be compiled into slipcase sets. Each issue will be a photobook of a city I have stayed in for a significant period of time, photographing and exploring. (-Ed Templeton)
