Photographer and filmmaker Yoshiyuki Okuyama's photo exhibition "White Light" will be held at Canon Gallery S in Shinagawa, Tokyo, from March 7th to April 15th.
This exhibition, a new venture by Yoshiyuki Okuyama, will feature works printed on Canon's imagePROGRAF large-format printer, presented in a spatial composition that encourages a renewed appreciation of the act of "looking at photographs."
White Light
We move through the pitch-black darkness, caressing the surface of the endlessly deep ocean.
All we can hear is the breathing of the waves and the sound of the engine.
As our eyes adjust to the night bushes, we spot white lights scattered in the distance.
Is it almost time? We've been rocking for about an hour.
I often recall the scenery I strained my eyes to search for, and the chill in my skin.
The white lights gather one boat after another, even before dawn.
Soon, with the cue of enka music, the net is cast and work begins.
The occasional flash of a camera clears the field of vision...
Suddenly, I felt a sense of nostalgia for the act of squinting and trying to understand.
Right now, we are illuminating not only the space but all the information and environment surrounding us, yet we remain passive and turn a blind eye to the occasional feeling of "I don't understand." Eventually, our increasingly distracted peripheral vision will cause us to relax our focus on the local area, and a shallow, colorful landscape will unfold below us.
Can our vision and perception still recognize the boundary between "seeing" and "being seen"?
Poetically speaking, are there things that are hidden by being able to see?
Is the photograph really the object of our awareness now?
I squint my eyes and shine the light.
What lies beyond that light? (Yoshiyuki Okuyama)
