Discover Japanese sweets in Paris: Famous shops, new shops, and artisans [CHAPTER 5: A tour of modern Parisian cafes]

Nov 25, 2018
As a bonus to our Japanese sweets feature, we'll introduce some charming cafes we visited in between sweet treats.

More and more Parisian cafe owners are using carefully selected beans and hand-dripping them

Cafes that focus on the flavor of their coffee are opening one after another in Paris. An increasing number of cafes are offering hand-dripping coffee, with a focus on carefully selected beans and roasting.

Start your morning with a bang! The chic "MATAMATA COFFEE"

"MATAMATA COFFEE" has a stylish exterior and is located in Paris's 2nd arrondissement. This small shop, packed with the owner's attention to detail, is bustling with regulars enjoying their morning coffee and takeout orders. They offer a full menu of milk-based drinks, including drip coffee (listed on the menu as CAFé FILTER), espresso cappuccinos, and lattes. When you order a latte, you'll be greeted with cute latte art, which will lift your spirits in the morning. The latte, served in a generous red cup, has a rich coffee flavor that won't bore you. In addition to coffee, their homemade cakes and pastries are also recommended. The carrot cake in particular is worth trying.

A stylish exterior and a delicious cup of coffee. "MATAMATA COFFEE" is a must-see.

Relax with Flowers and Coffee at "PEONIES"

Located on the outskirts of the Marais, "PEONIES" is a charming cafe with an attached flower shop. It was recommended by staff at the roasting atelier of the famous "Coutume café." As they use beans from "Coutume café," they have a hand-dripped menu marked with a V60 dripper. When I ordered, a large male staff member bent over and carefully brewed the coffee. The coffee was acidic, but not too light, with a strong flavor. The cappuccino with plenty of milk was also very delicious. Cakes and cookies decorated with edible flowers are perfect for Instagram

"Ob-La-Di": A cafe where you'll feel like a regular customer

"Ob-La-Di" is a small cafe in the fashionable Marais district that bustles from morning until late at night. The counter where you order your coffee is lined with freshly baked muffins and cookies. Their cappuccinos, with rich milk and thick foam, are incredibly delicious. It's easy to see why cafe menu items using milk, such as cappuccinos and lattes, are so popular. There are all kinds of people here, from people enjoying a drink before work, to families having breakfast, to people having morning meetings. It's a busy yet relaxing cafe, and even though it's my first time here, I feel comfortable.

Enjoy a mini déjeuner at "Poil'ne"

Poil'ne is a high-end boulangerie popular in Japan. It has four locations in Paris, but I went to the cozy Marais location for breakfast. While the cafe space was closed, I ordered the popular chausson aux pommes and coffee in the stylish eat-in area. The sweet apple compote and flaky bread paired perfectly with the mellow coffee. It's nice that it comes with one of their specialty cookies ♡

FRAGMENTS: A Stylish and Stylish Cafe

FRAGMENTS is located in North Marais. Entering the stylish black entrance, you'll be greeted by a Bruce Lee poster on the wall. This cafe, brimming with the owner's stylish taste, serves coffee made with carefully selected beans. The popular drip coffee (listed as filter coffee on the menu) is delicious, as are the cappuccinos and lattes. We also recommend the avocado toast seasoned with lime and herbs, a Parisian breakfast staple.
