Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read right now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Saturday, we will introduce books selected by Shelf, a Harajuku bookstore specializing in foreign books (3-7-4 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo).

■ "What's that (Annyamonnya)?" by Hanayo
Hanayo, a photographer born in Tokyo in 1970 and represented by Taka Ishii Gallery, trained as a geisha in the entertainment world of Tokyo in Mukojima, Tokyo from 1989 to 1995 before moving to the UK. Currently based in Tokyo and Berlin, she is active in a variety of fields, working as a photographer, geisha, musician, and model.
The "nanjomonoja" in the title of this book refers to the "nanjamonja tree," a mysterious tree.
After learning that this tree has existed in the outer gardens of Meiji Shrine, passing through generations from the Edo period to the present day, Hanayo used this phrase as a clue to weave a tale of one summer.
This work allows us to see a new side of Hanayo, as it wavers between "visible/invisible" and "understandable/unknown."
