Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read right now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Saturday, we will introduce books selected by Shelf, a Harajuku bookstore specializing in foreign books (3-7-4 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo).

■ Bright Black World by Todd Hido

For over 20 years, Todd Hido has been weaving photographic storytelling through untamed and enigmatic suburban landscapes, desolate landscapes, and stylized portraits. This new monograph features Todd Hido, who has traveled across North America capturing places that feel instantly familiar yet unfamiliar, welcoming yet unsettling. Many of his new images show a strong influence from Norse mythology, particularly the idea of "Fimbulwinter" (endless winter), suggesting and providing a form for the apocalyptic idea of endless winter. After exploring the dark geography of the Nordic landscape and areas stretching all the way to the North Sea of Japan that captivated Todd Hyde, several scenes called him back to the past.
This book showcases Todd Hido's new horizons as he expands his photography to regions outside the United States. The first printing of 3,000 copies includes a limited edition poster.
