Soft luster, unique shape, pale color. Lake Biwa pearls, resembling natural pearls from the Persian Gulf, were once popular in the United States and Europe, and were the star of jewelry exports. Despite an annual production of six tons in the 1950s, environmental degradation and Lake Biwa's water pollution prevented the oysters from growing properly. Their existence never spread throughout Japan, and they gradually faded from public memory. Even in these difficult times, oyster farmers persisted, working to improve the oysters and the environment. Their dedicated efforts and passion kept the oysters alive, and Lake Biwa continues to produce a small number of pearls. It takes three years to cultivate the oysters, and another three years for the pearls to form. Creating Lake Biwa pearls over a period of more than six years, using the advanced techniques of farmers and in the untouched natural environment, no two are alike in color, shape, or luster. Each pearl sways in the water, building up multiple layers over time. Its graceful beauty continues to grow in the lake today, undiminished.

This exhibition will also feature "Pearls of Lake Biwa," a collection of jewelry and plate sets including necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings and more, featuring original pearl designs and special plates created in collaboration between Kikofu and Jinbo Pearl Store, a Lake Biwa pearl specialty store founded in 1966.
