Golden Week starts this weekend, so what are you doing this year?

There are many popular art and photography exhibitions taking place in and around Tokyo, as well as in other parts of the country. Following on from our Golden Week outing summary "6 Food Festivals," this time we'll introduce 6 popular art spots that you can visit if you're going a little further afield, or even if you just want to take a bold trip!



Explore the Tokyo area and Kanagawa


Experience contemporary art by 51 artists, from Andy Warhol to Yoshitomo Nara, at the Hiratsuka Museum of Art (until June 17th)

The Hiratsuka Museum of Art is currently hosting "21st Century Art: Taguchi Art Collection: From Andy Warhol to Yoshitomo Nara," showcasing one of Japan's leading contemporary art collections, amassed by Hiroshi Taguchi. Taguchi, a businessman, is also known as a collector of contemporary art, and has previously held exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and the Sompo Japan Togo Seiji Museum of Art. In 2010, he published a collection of works from his collection, "Global New Art: Taguchi Collection" (Bijutsu Shuppansha). This exhibition is a very worthwhile one, showcasing works by a total of 51 artists, including Andy Warhol, Yoshitomo Nara, Matthew Barney, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Takashi Murakami, and more.

Japan's largest retrospective of Bruno Munari is currently being held in Hayama (until June 10th)

Japan's largest retrospective, allowing you to experience the wide-ranging creative activity of Bruno Munari through approximately 320 works. Approximately 150 of these works will be on display in Japan for the first time, including works from his time associated with Futurism and original illustrations for picture books from his later years. This is a great opportunity to learn about Munari, who has not been well known in Japan until now!

Kyoto's International Photography Festival "KYOTOGRAPHIE" Returns This Year


KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival 2018: Exhibition of works by cutting-edge artists from Japan and abroad under the theme "UP" (until May 13th)

The 6th KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival 2018, currently being held in Kyoto, has this year's theme of "UP." There's so much to see, it's hard to see everything in just one day, including Jean-Paul Goude's first solo exhibition in Japan, a traveling exhibition of Frank Horvat's work from Chanel Nexus Hall, an exhibition of works by avant-garde flower artist Yukio Nakagawa, an installation in which curator Atsuaki Katagiri arranges flowers in objects by Nakagawa, and Japan's first posthumous retrospective of Masahisa Fukase's work.

A photo exhibition featuring approximately 120 works by Mika Ninagawa of "Kyoto" and its "geisha district" (until May 13th)

A Mika Ninagawa photo exhibition is currently being held at the "Eki" KYOTO art museum, adjacent to the 7th floor of JR Kyoto Isetan. This exhibition will be the first to show approximately 120 works by Ninagawa, who also serves as a director of the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, that he took on Kyoto head-on over a period of more than two years. See for yourself the magnificent "Kyoto Fantasy Four Seasons Picture Scroll" created by these works, depicting the "geisha district," which is an accumulation of the best of traditional aesthetics, and the beautiful "scenery" of the four seasons.

Enjoy art while traveling


A comprehensive exhibition of Yayoi Kusama's work is currently being held in Matsumoto, her birthplace. What are the highlights? (Until July 22nd)

The Matsumoto City Museum of Art in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, Yayoi Kusama's birthplace, is hosting the exhibition "Yayoi Kusama: All About My Love." Experience the world of Yayoi Kusama through a total of around 180 works, including rare pieces from before she moved to the US in 1957, around 30 pieces from her latest series "My Eternal Soul," which began in 2009 and has produced over 550 pieces, some of which are being shown in Japan for the first time, as well as a mirror room and a pumpkin sculpture.

Get excited about art! "Dogo Onsenart 2018" opens in Dogo Onsen (2/28/2019)

"Dogo Onsenart 2018" is an art festival held in various locations around Dogo, including inns, hotels, and shopping streets in Dogo Onsen, Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. This marks the second time the event has been held since its inception in 2014, and this year's exhibition will feature works by approximately 25 artists, including Ohmaki Shinji, Ninagawa Mika, Ume Kayo, and Misawa Atsuhiko, including works that have been on display since 2014 and permanent works.
