Chikashi Suzuki began his career as a photographer at the magazine "Purple." As one of Japan's leading photographers, Suzuki has worked on global campaign visuals for brands such as ISSEY MIYAKE and TOGA, as well as domestic and international magazines. He has consistently been at the forefront of editorial and fashion photography since the 1990s.

This exhibition displays approximately 30 works selected from Suzuki's past work, including flowers, Tokyo landscapes, and portraits of actors such as Shota Sometani. Mixing directed photographs with snapshots, Suzuki also features previously unpublished work, creating a space that evokes Suzuki's thought process and the breadth of his gaze.

All photographs were shot on film, selected and assembled without any particular theme. They are not merely technically or conceptually relevant, but also feature an element of chance. A rich narrative emerges from the overlapping of intense moments—captured only because they were captured on film, which cannot be manipulated or retouched like digital media—and a certain mysterious energy permeates the images.

Alongside his use of positive film and dated photographs, Suzuki's signature techniques include using a half-frame camera to reduce sharpness and creating photographs composed of multiple frames. With the rise of digital cameras, Suzuki began to consider what freedom he could achieve within the limitations of film, and began creating works that capitalize on the limitations of half-frame cameras, which were considered to have poor performance. He explains that the damp texture he is able to express, ideally suited to capturing the streets of Japan, and particularly Tokyo, is something he discovered only with positive film, and that it was only with digital technology that he discovered it. His unique photographic world, a beauty that lingers deeply in the heart, is a simple snapshot of the passing of time. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to fully appreciate the diverse aspects of Suzuki's work, which has primarily been presented in editorial formats until now. An opening reception will be held on April 21, the first day of the exhibition, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
