Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read right now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Saturday, we will introduce books selected by Shelf, a Harajuku bookstore specializing in foreign books (3-7-4 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo).



■ "A Trilogy" by Jessica Backhaus

This is the latest book by German-born contemporary photographer Jessica Backhaus. It contains three series. "Beyond Blue" features a simple composition of a single string against a colorful background, but the contrast between the shape created by the string and the color of the background draws the viewer in. Then there are "Shifting Clouds" and "New Horizon," in which paper, tape, and other materials are layered on top of printed photographs, recreating them as images. These ambitious works question concepts of flatness, three-dimensionality, and time by placing photographs, which are normally considered flat, in a nested manner within other photographs.

Currently, Shelf is holding the "Kehrer Photo Book Fair 2017." This fair brings together new photo books from the popular German art publisher Kehrer, including "A Trilogy," and features a lineup of works by photographers such as Saul Leiter and Sarah MOON. Customers who purchase during the fair will receive an original gift tag!
