Our Thursday series features must-read books from each branch of the art bookshop NADiff. This week's recommendation is "GROUND 2: Talking About Paintings - Talking About One's Own Work." It's introduced by NADiff Aichi, the Aichi/Nagoya branch (Aichi Arts Center B2F, 1-13-2 Higashisakura, Higashi-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture).

■ "GROUND 2: Talking About Paintings - Talking About One's Own Work"
GROUND is a group whose shared purpose is to demonstrate the "potential of painting." Formed in 2014 by five painters—Kobayashi Takanobu, Nukata Nobuhiko, Maruyama Naofumi, Takahashi Nobuyuki, and Igari Masanori—GROUND, which held the exhibition "Discussing Paintings—Discussing Our Own Works" that same year, has continued its activities. Rather than unilaterally preaching historical facts or imposing painting theories, the group aims to create an open "space" (GROUND) where painters and viewers can think and converse together. This book is a catalog of an exhibition held at the Musashino Art University Museum Gallery from May 23 to August 21, 2016. It consists of two volumes: a catalog featuring the exhibition, which focuses on new works by the five artists, and a record of a symposium held on the theme of "discussing perspectives" ("Discussing perspectives—Can paintings be discussed, for example, through rakugo?" and "Discussing perspectives—For example, viewing films and viewing paintings"). Moderated by Rei Nakamura, who joined GROUND in 2016, the symposium actively explores fields beyond painting, allowing members and guests to discuss multifaceted perspectives. What do artists see, how do they see it, and how do they communicate it? The dialogue generated by the two "venues" of the exhibition and symposium will realize GROUND's shared goal of "showing the possibilities of painting." The "GROUND α collaborative drawings" in-store fair will be held at NADiff aichi until September 18th. Drawings born from a unique experiment in which five GROUND members collaboratively painted on a single piece of paper in a relay format following instructions will be on display and for sale. Following the "GROUND α collaborative drawings—We built a house together on my land" exhibition held at NADiff Gallery in June 2017, this fair allows visitors to see the works in person.
