Louis Vuitton and Yayoi Kusama kick off second chapter of partnership after 10 years

May 19, 2022

Ten years after its global collaboration with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, Louis Vuitton is announcing the second chapter of that partnership, with a major launch planned for January 2023 in Louis Vuitton stores around the world.

Since its founding in 1854, Louis Vuitton has cultivated strong ties to the art world, collaborating with a succession of artists who bring their own unique vision to the Maison. These close relationships have resulted in innovative interpretations of the Maison's iconic creations, rewriting the rules of creative collaboration between luxury brands and artists. The 2012 collaboration with Yayoi Kusama resulted in a spectacular presence within Louis Vuitton's diverse universe, featuring an exhibition, diverse products, and a series of unique window displays—including lifelike mannequins modeled after Yayoi Kusama.

Born in March 1929, Yayoi Kusama is an avant-garde artist who expresses her unique perspective through a variety of mediums, including sculpture, painting, installation, filmmaking, photography, happenings (body art), and various writing styles. While considered a pioneer of Pop Art and Minimalism, her diverse artistic practice defies simple categorization. Yayoi Kusama's artwork began with a hallucination in which the red floral pattern on her dining tablecloth began to spread across the walls, floor, and even herself. She has continued to explore the mysteries of life by combating her own inner fears and obsessions and expressing the hallucinations she has experienced since childhood. To celebrate the relationship between Louis Vuitton and Yayoi Kusama and the 10th anniversary of their first collaboration, several leather goods models were previewed at Women's Artistic Director Nicolas Ghesquière's 2023 Women's Cruise Show at the Salk Institute in San Diego. These exclusive bags reinterpret Louis Vuitton's signature shapes and new models, featuring Yayoi Kusama's signature polka dot pattern. A full overview of the collaboration, covering all Louis Vuitton categories, will be unveiled in January 2023.

Further details will be announced at a later date.
