Popular hair and makeup artist Hiromi Yamamoto explains the secret to beauty: "Decide your own position"

Sep 12, 2015

On September 5th and 6th, popular hair and makeup artist Hiromi Yamamoto, who is in high demand in women's magazines and on television, appeared as a lecturer at the "Beauty Seminar for Adults." The event took place at the fitness club "B.B.V.ola" (5th at Shibuya branch, 6th at Shinjuku branch). Together with Yuko Miyagi, a body creator at the same studio, she demonstrated "ways to achieve beauty both inside and out" for women who continue to radiate even as they age. The second day of the seminar began with a conversation between the two. Yamamoto and Miyagi are the same age, and while their ideal styles differ, they share the same commitment to "striving to stay beautiful and healthy so they can continue to love themselves as they are, no matter how old they get." Their mutual respect was clear even to outsiders, from their words and the way they exchanged glances. "I wasn't originally interested in Kaatsu, but I thought Miyagi's supple body was amazing, and I wanted to learn from her," Yamamoto confessed. Miyagi then recommended consuming protein as a tip for building a beautiful body. She continued, "No matter how hard you train, if you don't have enough nutrients to create beautiful skin and hair, your body won't change. Using protein is one way to efficiently build a beautiful body." She also revealed that she actively consumes hydrogen, which removes free radicals from the body, and silicon, which plays a role in connecting tissues in the human body. Yamamoto responded, "I'm not good at taking supplements on a continuous basis. That's why I try to think, 'As long as it makes sense, it's OK.' In other words, I take or don't take them depending on the condition of my skin and my physical condition. To that end, I think it's important to know yourself well." This philosophy is also firmly reflected in Yamamoto's makeup techniques.

According to Yamamoto, the most important thing for adults when it comes to makeup is "determining your position." What he means is that each person's unique characteristics vary depending on their bone structure and the size and placement of their facial features, so by understanding what type of facial features you have, you can fully bring out their best.

So, what types are there? First of all, they can be roughly divided into two. Yamamoto describes these two as "people whose faces become rough and bony as they grow older, and people whose faces become fuller," naming the former "Takarazuka type" (= Takarazuka type) and the latter "Hime type."

Furthermore, each of these can be divided into two based on whether the facial structure is flashy or not, resulting in four categories: "Simple Takarazuka type," "Decora Takarazuka type" (= Decorative Takarazuka type), "Simple Princess type," and "Decora Princess type." All the women identified as belonging to one or more of these categories, and Yamamoto explained ways to enhance their attractiveness by incorporating elements from a different type than themselves or ways to utilize their own unique qualities. For example, she mentioned how "simple princess" entertainer YOU exudes a new charm through Takarazuka-style fashion. Her easy-to-understand explanations quickly captivated the audience, as they began to imagine what they would look like after the transformation. Furthermore, when Yamamoto walked around to each participant's seat and asked, "What type do you think you are?" everyone answered immediately. Their interest in thinking about their own unique qualities and how to look more beautiful seemed to double. The four types and their characteristics are explained in detail in Yamamoto's book, "How to Become the Second Most Beautiful at a Class Reunion...With a Little Wig" (Shogakukan), but simply knowing how to apply makeup to your type can make everyday fashion more enjoyable.
