London-based street art gallery LAZARIDES GALLERY has opened a limited-time exhibit in the West Park section of the 3rd floor of the Isetan Shinjuku department store. It will be open until April 29th. This marks the gallery's first visit to Japan.
Lazarides Gallery is a London gallery said to have had a constant influence on the art world this century. Known for being one of the first galleries to represent Banksy (a masked artist active mainly in London), the gallery handles some of the most edgy works among street art galleries. It also supports and nurtures up-and-coming artists, and has produced internationally acclaimed photographers such as JR and Antony Micallef. Regarding the reason for introducing the gallery to the store, the buyer in charge commented, "Stores with discerning customers, such as Paris select shop Colette and London department store Selfridges, exhibit and sell street art alongside fashion items. We wanted to create an opportunity for people in Japan to experience art in the same way they would touch fashion, so we approached them." For this project, Lazarides Gallery sent the gallery photos of the floor, which offers fashionable fashion, as well as images of popular items on the floor, and selected works that would resonate with the sensibilities of its customers. The gallery selected approximately 10 artists for this floor, which attracts fashion-conscious customers, including street artist Zevs, born in France in 1977. Zevs is an artist who creates graffiti on brand logos using a technique known as "visual kidnapping," in which he drips paint onto the logos, visually obstructing the mark. This year's exhibit features the familiar Google logo dripping with colorful paint.
Other artists on display include graffiti artist Ben Eine, who is famous for presenting a work to President Obama when Prime Minister Cameron visited the United States; up-and-coming artist CYCLOPS, who creates works using skeletons as icons; German illustrator MARIO WAGNER, known for his time-transcending works set in outer space and the near future; New York-based Todd James; and globally acclaimed contemporary artist RON ENGLISH, in the footsteps of Andy Warhol.
