Christophe Coppin's solo exhibition at hpgrp Gallery. "Healing wounds" by sewing canvases

Sep 23, 2014

hpgrp GALLERY TOKYO (5-7-17 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo) will be hosting Belgian artist Christophe Coppens' solo exhibition "Early Paintings" from October 7th to October 20th.

In 2013, Christophe Coppens held his solo exhibition "Landscape 1," which explored the themes of deconstruction and archiving the past, at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in the Netherlands. In his follow-up, "Landscape 2," he expressed new life using forms evocative of sexual excitement and stimulation.

And in his first exhibition, "Early Paintings," held in New York this spring, the theme is healing wounds and building a new self, cell by cell. Coppens, who had always been afraid of painting out of great respect for his favorite painters, says he overcame that fear by starting by "stitching" the canvas. The act of sewing, which he describes as a "ritual," is healing and salvation, leading him to a freer expression. He now describes his own work as his salvation.

After gaining experience as a stage set director, Christophe Coppens launched his own brand, "Christophe Coppens," as an accessories designer at the age of 21. He continued to work in the fashion world for the next 21 years, even creating formal items for the Belgian royal family. His work was recognized, and in 2010 he was officially awarded the title of "Royal Purveyor" by the Belgian royal family. However, two years later, he decided to end his career as a fashion designer and focus on creating art. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, USA.

In Japan, his works were exhibited in the exhibition space of the Aoyama men's select shop "DECOdeBONAIR," which opened last year. Coppens himself will be visiting Japan to coincide with this solo exhibition.
