The Foujita Tsuguharu exhibition showcases 110 of his masterpieces

Oct 19, 2016

The "Tsuguharu Foujita Exhibition," showcasing the full scope of painter Tsuguharu Foujita's artistic world, is running until December 11th at the Fuchu Art Museum in Fuchu, Tokyo.
After moving to Paris at the age of 26, Foujita quickly became a Parisian darling thanks to his unique style, which he developed through trial and error. He captivated Parisians with his numerous "paintings that bridge East and West," which combined classical Western subjects like nudes and self-portraits with a delicate Japanese aesthetic and skillful technique. However, as he shouldered the dual worlds of Paris and Japan, Foujita also experienced the pain of feeling torn between the two. The more acclaim he gained in Paris, the greater his popularity became, leading to a mixture of jealousy and envy from the Japanese art community. After the war, he was held responsible for producing war paintings and was exiled from Japan. In his later years, he devoted himself to building chapels and creating murals. He died at the age of 81. This exhibition traces the creative path of Fujita, focusing on the fusion and conflict of Eastern and Western cultures. From his graduation project at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts at age 24, to the age of 36 when he created the "milky white ground" beloved by the French, to the age of 56 when he painted "The Suicide Attack on Attu Island," considered his greatest war painting, to his final years at age 70 when he continued to paint ideal children, the exhibition will feature approximately 110 of Fujita's representative works from Japan and abroad, including previously unseen works recently donated to the city of Reims, providing a comprehensive look at the world of Fujita's work. While Fujita was blessed with glamorous success, his life was also filled with suffering and conflict, and his works reveal an artist who was sincerely committed to the act of painting.
