Have you heard of John Waters?
Since I started working with him, I've received a Christmas card from him every year. His cards have such great taste that it made me wonder who he really is. I'd always known him only as a fashion-loving film director from Baltimore, but the more I couldn't grasp who he was, the more intrigued I became.
His most famous film as a director is "Hairspray." He recently published a book called "Role Models" and curated an exhibition at the Walker Art Center. He also served as a jury member for the 2011 Venice Biennale. The work of Christoph Schlingensief in the German Pavilion, which he and the other jury members selected for the Golden Lion, was very "European" and beautiful.
Waters is witty and creates some pretty amazing art. Film director, actor, writer, artist, collector, curator... Who exactly is he?
He just does what he loves...
Waters calls himself a cult leader. It's a cult because we don't understand him, we can't grasp him, and he does whatever he wants.
And it's precisely because we don't understand him that he's so fascinating.
In the Christmas card Waters sent me this year, she was dressed as Mary and holding Jesus (lol).
