The group exhibition "OPEN WORLD" will be held at PAAMA, an art space located in Kagurazaka, Tokyo. Curated by New Scale, a contemporary cultural media outlet that spans the creative realm of today, the exhibition attempts to shed light on the complex layers of modern society through the diverse expressions of four artist groups.

The participating artists are Soft Baroque, Pierre Castignola, Geray Mena, and Toshiki Yagisawa. The exhibition title, "OPEN WORLD," is inspired by the "open world" format found in games, encouraging visitors to become the "protagonist" of their own story and weave their own individual perspectives through their encounter with the artwork.

Four practices where multiple layers of perception and narrative intersect
In this exhibition, artists with different approaches will tackle themes such as perception, systems, materials, and memory in contemporary society.
・Soft Baroque
A duo based in Ljubljana, Slovenia, consisting of Nicholas Gardner and Sasha Szczucin. They create subtle sensory "gap" in the form of furniture, inducing a multi-layered sense of sensation. Their work has included collaborations with Balenciaga, and they have received international acclaim for their unique forms that explore the boundaries between the physical and the digital.

・Pierre Castignola
A designer living in the Netherlands. He creates conceptual works that critically explore consumer culture and intellectual property systems, using everyday items as a medium. In his signature work, "Copytopia," he reconstructs a plastic garden chair from multiple parts, questioning the boundaries between "imitation and creation" in the context of patent protection.

・Geray Mena
An artist from Spain. He has studied a wide range of forms of expression, including painting, sculpture, and clothing design, with a focus on photography, and his work revolves around photography. With a background as a furniture craftsman, he has reflected his deep insight into materials and structure in his work. In recent years, he has incorporated technologies such as AI and large-format cameras in his pursuit of images in which ephemeral moments and eternity coexist. Through the medium of photography, he quietly questions the very nature of time, memory, and perception.

・Toshiki Yagisawa
An artist who freely crosses over between ceramics, woodworking, 3D printing, CGI and more, creating new stories between materials and digital. Also known as the founder of New Scale, he is expanding the possibilities of visual culture through collaborations with brands and artists both in Japan and abroad.

PAAMA, the venue, is a new space created by art director Akinobu Maeda. Maeda is known for his numerous culturally rooted projects, such as the visual direction of the Yokohama DeNA BayStars and the relaunch of Popeye. Opened in Kagurazaka, this space actively introduces young artists to the art of perm, a beauty technique familiar to Japanese people that aims to change freely and transcend the boundaries of culture and disciplines.

Curate this exhibitionNew Scale is a platform that records and edits trends in thought and sensibility in contemporary creative fields, including art, design, music, and architecture. It aims to carefully glean diverse practices and transform information into experiences. Through exhibitions and product creation, it has sought to provide inspiration that reaches deep into perception and imagination. "OPEN WORLD" is an exhibition that truly embodies this approach. As viewers "re-encounter" the works, it will be an opportunity to raise individual questions about the future of visual culture.
