Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Saturday, we will introduce books selected by Shelf (3-7-4 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo), a Harajuku/Gaienmae bookshop that specializes in foreign books.

■ "Alice in London" Valerie Phillips

Valerie Phillips' 10th collection of works, "Alice in Londonland," is a record of the author and model Alice's travels around London.

Rather than the usual images of tourists looking like they're having fun, or the overly dramatic black-and-white news photographs that are the norm, his images vividly depict real events in London, creating the colorful, messy, and vibrant world that is his signature.

Alice takes us through places we might otherwise miss, from backstreets and pubs to cafes, pie and mash shops, the Victorian Dinosaur Museum in Crystal Palace Park, streets and buildings. We come across dragons, flowers, peeling paint, animal murals and Roman-style walls.

The photographs capture Alice's everyday life, finding the perfect outfit from charity shops, vintage sources, and Valerie's own mix-and-match collection. Seeking a change from her busy work schedule, the photographer took time off to explore the area around her London home. Alice acts as a tour guide, showing us around London.
