Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Saturday, we will introduce books selected by Shelf, a Harajuku bookstore specializing in foreign books (3-7-4 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo).


■ "Substance" by Ikuhisa Sawada


This collection of works by Sawada Ikuhisa presents fragmentary photographs of station walls, pillars, staircases, shutters, and more, as if they were works of contemporary art. This book is bound in a stepped pattern with pages of different sizes, allowing readers to experience the visual effect of the overlapping images of the back pages and the front pages.


To coincide with the publication of the photo book, an exhibition will be held at CAGE GALLERY, a display-style gallery in Ebisu, Tokyo that can be viewed from the street, and The White, an alternative space in Jimbocho run by Ikuhisa Sawada. "CAGE GALLERY" explores the relationships between photographs hung in a space, and between photographs and space. Based on the idea that "perhaps it is possible to gain new images by simultaneously viewing the relationships captured in multiple photographs," the exhibition attempts to expand the photograph beyond the frame by colliding the prints arranged in space and the relationships between the images.

Ikuhisa Sawada is a photographer and artist born in Tokyo in 1970. He ran "The Gallery" from 2012 to 2013 and the alternative space "The White" since 2014. His previous works include the solo exhibition "closed circuit" (TOKI Art Space/Tokyo) in 2011 and the year-long series "closed circuit, monthly vol.1-vol12" (The Gallery/Tokyo), which presented new works each month from November 2012. His photo book "closed circuit" was published in 2017 under his own label, The White. In October 2018, RONDADE released their latest work, "substance," which is introduced here.
