Illumination and art event "Smart Illumination Yokohama 2018" will be held again this year in the Minato Mirai area

Event Date:2018.10.31-11.04
Aug 14, 2018
Smart Illumination Yokohama 2018, an art event that weaves environmental technology and art to create a night view unlike any other in the world, will be held at Zou-no-hana Park and other locations from October 31st to November 4th.

This year marks the 8th time Smart Illumination Yokohama has been held.

This year's theme for the art program, which is the main content, is "Potential of Light." While the industry is saturated with technical light, such as new energy and renewable energy technologies such as solar power generation, energy storage, LED, and OLED, we focus on the potential of light to connect people, and explore the fusion of even more ``HI-SMART'' environmental and energy-saving technology with art, creating interactive and colorful spaces together with artists.

The participating artists announced in advance this time are Kubo Hiroko, TETSUJIN (Takahashi Tetsuto, Moshimura Maiko), and the Kakei Yasuaki Laboratory at the University of Tokyo and Keio University.

Hiroko Kubo's work "Pacific Feet" was inspired by the two feet that remain when idols are destroyed. Made from wire mesh and netting used to prevent animal damage in Japan's densely populated areas, it was created as an homage to the labor and production of farmers. Originally titled "Doroashi" (Mud Feet), the work was re-titled "Umiashi" for this event, adding the element of light. Visitors can enter the inside of the feet, and the light changes depending on their actions.

TETSUJIN's "Star☆Jam Street - Cleaning Instrument Musical Dream" is an interactive sound and light art piece that invites audience participation, featuring cleaning instruments shaped like cleaning tools. When viewers play the cleaning instruments, the sound resonates, and video lighting is activated, transforming the space into a stage. Those who were just viewers moments ago are transformed into performers, and by joining in, a session begins. "Pneuma," from the Yasuaki Kakei Laboratory at the University of Tokyo and Keio University, captures the fleeting phenomenon of breath using soap film and light, bringing to light the presence of people in the space. Participants create bubbles by applying soap solution to the straw-shaped Pneuma device and blowing into it. Depending on the breath blown into it, Pneuma illuminates the dark night with light of various colors and intensities. Several special collaborative projects are planned and scheduled to coincide with Smart Illumination Yokohama 2018 in the waterfront area of central Yokohama. Yokohama Customs, a historic building affectionately known as the "Queen's Tower," hosts tours of the building several times a year. This year, a special tour, "Yokohama Customs Night Tour," will be held to coincide with the event. Four rooms will be open to the public, including the former special conference room, restored to its original condition in 1934, and the former customs commissioner's office where General MacArthur is said to have worked. Part of Zō-no-hana Park can also be seen from the observation deck on the 7th floor. The event will be open from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM on November 3rd, and participation is free. During Smart Illumination Yokohama 2018, SUITAKU, a water taxi that departs from Zō-no-hana Pier and operates between Minatomirai Station and the boat park accessible from Sakuragicho, will offer a special itinerary that allows visitors to enjoy the art program from the water. Boarding is available from Zō-no-hana Pier from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM from October 31st to November 4th. The fare is 7,000 yen per trip. Collaborations are also planned with facilities, companies, organizations, restaurants, and services in Yokohama's waterfront area.
