Photographer Yusuke Yamatani will hold a solo exhibition, "Doors," at Yuka Tsuruno Gallery, located closest to Tennozu Isle Station in Tokyo.
Yusuke Yamatani was born in Niigata Prefecture in 1985. He self-published his first photo book, "Tsugi no yoru e," in 2013. Since then, he has presented his work using a variety of methods both in Japan and abroad, including participating in the Kyoto International Photography Festival and exhibiting at the Condé Nast headquarters in New York. His major photo books include "ground" (lemon books), which was shown at a solo exhibition at POST/limArt in Ebisu in 2014, and "Into the Light" (T&M Projects), which was shown at BOOKMARC in Harajuku in 2017.
And this year, during the "KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival 2018," he held a new exhibition, "The doors," at Gallery Yamatani. Gallery Yamatani is a elusive gallery curated by Yusuke Yamatani himself, aiming to exhibit works in a space that suits the concept of each work. This was his first exhibition at this venue in three years, since "Use before" in 2015. In the dark, Earthquake performed a drumming performance, a technique he has been practicing since his teens. While Yamatani pounded the drums vigorously for long periods of time, portraits were taken, and simultaneously printed photographs filled the venue. The photographs were taken using a unique camera device. When Yamatani struck the drums, a vibration sensor attached to the drum set responded, triggering the shutter. This resulted in his first self-portrait, "The Doors."

The upcoming "Doors" exhibition will feature footage of "The Doors," shot at Gallery Yamatani, along with self-portraits and photograms made from scratches on the drumheads, traces of Yamatani's performances.
--The intense light of countless flashes emitted by the shutter in the darkness represents our gaze in a modern world where truth and lies are intertwined, and also an approach to hidden truths (Yamatani Yusuke).
