"The Secrets of Cinema" is a project that will be held for three days from November 17th to 19th at Theater 21 of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, screening films selected based on themes such as politics, society, philosophy, life and death, consumer culture, human absurdity, play, eras and entertainment, and visual beauty.
This year marks the 18th anniversary of the event, and it will focus on the visual expressions of three internationally active contemporary artists, with the theme of "Bio Baroque (the excess and distortion of life)." This year's festival will feature a screening of all five "Cremaster" films and "Drawings of Restraint" by internationally acclaimed artist Matthew Barney, whose works are housed in the museum's collection and have not been shown in Japan in recent years. The festival will also feature the first-ever screening of the complete works of Saskia Oldwarvers, a cult figure known for her meticulously crafted sci-fi stories and visuals so realistic they seem unrealistic. It will also feature a collection of experimental video works by Pierre Huyghe, whose work is gaining international acclaim. In conjunction with the "Collection Exhibition 2: Immortal Life" currently being held at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, there will also be a special screening of Kim Ki-duk's "STOP," which has sparked international controversy by addressing the Fukushima issue, and a video work by Yakushimaru Etsuko, whose DNA music piece "I Am Humanity" is also on display at the same exhibition. Don't miss this rare opportunity!
The screening schedule during the event is as follows: from 7pm to 9pm on November 17th, Saskia Oldwarbas' latest work, and a total of nine films (1999-2017/120min), including films not yet released in Japan; from 10am to 10:40am on November 18th, Matthew Barney's Cremaster 1 (40min), from 10:55am to 12:14pm, Cremaster 2 (79min), from 1:15pm to 4:32pm, Cremaster 3 (182min), from 4:50pm to 5:32pm, Cremaster 4 (42min), from 5:50pm to 6:44pm, Cremaster 5 (54min), and Restraint Drawing 9 (135min) from 7:10pm to 9:25pm. On November 19th, from 10am to 11:15am, Pierre Huyghe's "Short Film Selection," all five works (1999-2014/75 minutes), from 12:45pm to 2:47pm, Pierre Huyghe's "The Host and The Cloud" (2009-2010/122 minutes), from 3:05pm to 4:27pm, Kim Ki-duk's "STOP" (2015/82 minutes), and from 5pm to 7pm, "Video Selection," including live footage of Yakushimaru Etsuko (2008-2017/120 minutes).
