"bausatz noto ∞," a solo exhibition by Carsten Nicolai, who works as a video artist and musician under the name Alva Noto, is running until December 23rd at Art Front Gallery in Daikanyama, Tokyo.
Carsten Nicolai began his career as an artist in the 1990s. In 1997, his talent was recognized and he exhibited his work at Documenta X in Kassel. He later became known for his electronic music under the name Alva Noto, and has been active in both music and art, presenting works using fax and click sounds.
In Japan, in 2003, he installed a Sun Recorder in the Kawanishi area of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, which measures and stores the hours of sunlight in the area over a three-year period. In 2007, he unveiled "invertone," an anechoic chamber covered in a material that absorbs sound reverberations, at the ICC in Hatsudai. In 2012, he presented "Wellenwanne LFO," a work in which ripples in an aquarium are projected onto a screen in response to changes in frequency. Last year, he won the Grand Prize in the Art Division at the Japan Media Arts Festival organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. He also exhibited his work in this year's "Simple Forms" exhibition at the Mori Art Museum, and in the recently renovated first-floor entrance of Seibu Shibuya Store's Building A, he installed a piece whose color and sound change depending on the outside temperature and the flow of people.
This solo exhibition will feature "bausatz noto ∞ - color vinyl display, 1998/2015," a set consisting of a record and four turntables. This work is a color version of a work first presented in 1998. By combining four records and playing them at different speeds, an infinite range of sounds can be created. The work itself also functions as a device for creating music.
