■ "Kaneuji Teppei's Mercator Membrane" by Kaneuji Teppei

Kaneuji Teppei (1978-) is an artist who creates dynamic installations using mass-produced items found in our daily lives (toys, plastic products, printed materials, etc.). He creates his works using a collage-like technique, cutting out and connecting parts from a wide variety of materials to reinterpret existing contexts. This book is the exhibition catalog for "Teppei Kaneuji's Mercator Membrane," held at the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art from July to November 2016. It was created in collaboration with a variety of contributors and collaborators, including novelist Yu Nagashima, who came up with the exhibition's title, as well as designers, musicians, actors, and audience members, all of whom exchanged roles to create a catalog that reflects the exhibition's content. The book's diverse content includes a collection of manga works, a concept book containing dance scores, and a collection of dialogues, interviews, and essays. Its unique content and book design defy the traditional catalog format, while also retaining the appearance of a printed work in the context of the "Teppei Kaneuji's Mercator Membrane" exhibition. This is a must-read book to enjoy alongside your visit to the exhibition. Its departure from the traditional book format is also a truly unique idea. The transparent plastic bags that come with the packaging all feature hand-drawn drawings by Kaneuji, and each type is packaged in a luxurious, one-of-a-kind package. Inside the bags are multiple booklets and crumpled-up printed materials, and the buzz of these mixed materials, each designed by a different designer, can be felt even through the plastic bag.
